Midlife Awakening: No more “Someday”

I was recently in the midst of a profound coaching conversation with a midlife client reflecting on her aspirations.  She was intensely feeling to what extent she wanted to finish the book she has been writing and get it published.  Suddenly, she said, “there is no more Someday, I am 52 years old!” Something shifted in her mind with that realization and we captured the momentum to explore how she might best proceed to realize that important goal, going forward.  As I invited her imagination to play a part in identifying specific next steps, I guided her into the exercise of consulting with an imaginary board.  In her mind’s eye, she could see herself sitting in an awe-inspiring setting consulting with a couple of her most cherished ancestors and a favorite author...

Suspend Disbelief: Reach your Dreams in 2015

Unleash your imagination and play along with me for a moment.  Imagine across space and time that you are from another galaxy about to visit planet Earth, 5,000 years ago.  You are told that Nature on this planet is truly astounding.  As a small sample of its wonders, you are told that humongous falls (now called Niagara – I was there in November) pour out over 750,000 gallons of water per second, daily.  You are told that creatures in the animal world demonstrate enormous fortitude and effort; salmon travels back, against the current, to its river of birth, completing a 4,000 km lifetime journey, to both continue the life cycle and to die.   That seasonal movement of birds sees millions of them repeatedly flying back up to thousands of miles, to nest and dwell...

This Fall, Say YES to Learning with REANA in Mind

Naturally, in our culture, most people associate September with “back to school” / learning time.  If you are a life-long learner, as I am, you probably still get that sense of calling toward learning something new and fresh as fall sets in our midst. In neuroscience, it’s been well established that learning is part of what stimulates new neural pathways in the brain across the whole lifespan.  Dr. Daniel Siegel has identified the 5 major ways in which we can keep stimulating new neural pathways.  I have created an acronym – REANA – to help you remember these ways of keeping your brain thriving: R – Repetition – as when we repeat an action to learn it, whether learning a piece of music on an instrument or any other kind of skill we want to master. E – ...

Relationship Crossroads? From Ambivalence to Clarity

You may have noticed, as I have, an abundance of programs and books on attracting one’s soul mate.  Finding that special soul companion is not necessarily easy, regardless of age. Off course online dating is increasingly popular and it leads to the desired results for numerous couples. But, for every couple whose initial romantic connection grows and turns into an enduring relationship and even marriage, there are about 10 couples who won’t make it past the honeymoon phase of 3-4 months.  Most of those couples will breakup within 6 months while others will settle for an increasingly unsatisfying relationship that is marred by doubts, patterns of conflicts and distancing behaviors mixed with periods of momentary closeness. Sooner or later, those relationships are...
